An unidentified man driving a red sedan arrived at the doors of an animal shelter in Orange County and abandoned his puppy. The act of cruelty caught on camera has drawn attention online recently.
The incident took place on April 10, and the surveillance camera footage was later released publicly by the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center. The organization said the clip was released in public interest so that authorities and the public could help identify the individual who left the puppy.
Cold-Hearted Man Turns His Back On Puppy
The clip begins with a red sedan approaching the entrance of a animal shelter. The individual arrived during one of the least busy hours of the facility, at around 3:25 a.m. It suggested the individual intended to avoid detection while carrying out the act.
The man exited the car with the puppy at his heels and walked toward the facility’s entrance. Without hesitation, he pushed the puppy through the gate opening. As the dog wriggled inside the premises, the man turned his back and drove off in the night.
Man Deliberately Leaves Puppy In Coyote-Prone Area
While abandoning the puppy was an act of cruelty, authorities said the individual left the animal in a coyote-prone area. Officials from the animal services center said the location increased the risk of predator attacks.
The neighborhood of the animal shelter is infamously known as the coyote center. The abandoned puppy was at significant risk of being attacked. The puppy survived but was extremely shaken after being abandoned by its owner.
Fortunately, the puppy wandered to the doorstep of a veterinary urgent care clinic. Staff found the puppy and rushed it inside immediately after noticing it was scared and disoriented. The puppy is now doing well and is under the care of the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center.
In a statement to the press, a spokesperson for the animal care center condemned the abandonment and reminded the public that such actions are illegal under California law.
Facility director Brynn Lavison said, “Abandoning an animal is illegal under California law. This is a deeply troubling and unacceptable act. There are safe, humane, and legal options for individuals who are unable to care for an animal. Abandoning a defenseless puppy in this manner not only endangers the animal but is also a violation of the law.”
Meanwhile, authorities are conducting an active search for the suspect, who has been absconding since the incident. Besides the details of the man and his car as caught on camera, the investigators are trying to piece together more details so they can nab the individual.
The Mission Viejo Animal Services Center has opened a helpline for anyone with information on the suspect. If the individual is spotted, the public is encouraged to report to the facility and assist in investigation.
