Jeremy Black was fatally shot while walking with his wife and friends after dinner in Washington, D.C.

A Washington, D.C., man was sentenced to 18 years in prison on April 10 for killing a 53-year-old man who was walking on the street with his wife and friends after dinner at a nearby restaurant.

Dearay Wilson, 30, shot Jeremy Black in June 2021. According to U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro, Wilson pleaded guilty on February 13, 2026, to second-degree murder while armed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

Judge Neal E. Kravitz said Wilson’s prison term will be followed by five years of supervised release. He was also ordered to register as a gun offender.

What Happened?

On June 29, 2021, Wilson and three other individuals, armed with firearms, drove to Johnson Avenue Northwest.

Once there, they reportedly fired multiple shots at a group of people outside an apartment building in the 1400 block of R Street Northwest.

Black was an innocent bystander walking through the area with his wife and two friends after dining at a restaurant, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

“Black and a friend were crossing Johnson Avenue when Wilson and the other shooters fired over 45 rounds on a busy public street,” the office said, “Black was struck once in his left torso and died at the scene. After the shooting, Wilson and the other shooters fled the scene in the stolen vehicle.”

Neighbors’ Statements

Neighbor Janice Holland, who heard the gunfire, said she ran outside to see what had happened. “I saw a man laying on the ground, his wife in the background calling out his name, telling him ‘I love you,;” she said, according to CBS affiliate WUSA.

Another neighbor told local NBC affiliate WRC that his window shattered during the shooting.

“My window shattered and I kind of got covered in glass, and a bit of bullet shrapnel landed next to me,” he said.

Attorney’s Statement

This sentencing sends a clear and necessary message: violent crime will not go unanswered,” said U.S. Attorney Pirro.

“Dearay Wilson and other shooters indiscriminately fired over 45 rounds into a busy public street, killing Jeremy Black—an innocent man walking with his wife and friends after dinner. Our thoughts remain with his loved ones, and this office remains committed to stopping outrageous killing on the streets of the District,” Pirro said.

Jeremy Black Remembered

In his obituary, Black was described as “an avid golfer” who hoped to one day play on the professional senior golf circuit.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy Feingold, and their two sons, Myles and Alex.

“After earning an undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis, he served as a volunteer for the Peace Corps in the Comoros Islands, leading to a lifelong passion of promoting a deeper understanding between people across and within borders,” his obituary said.
