A 69-year-old man has been accused of killing a teenager and seriously injuring her father in a road accident.

The accused, a 69-year-old man identified as Douglus Proehl from Wisconsin, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on April 13. Proehl is being accused of killing a 17-year-old teenager identified as Clohe Bishop and seriously injuring her father, who was also present in the vehicle during the time of the crash. '

He was charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, operating while intoxicated (OWI) causing injury, and prohibited alcohol content causing injury.

According to an amended criminal complaint obtained by local affiliate WLUK, police said they smelled alcohol on Proehl’s breath when authorities arrived at the scene of the crash in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin.

Proehl allegedly refused to take a sobriety test and cursed at officers, according to authorities.

WLUK reported that the amended criminal complaint, filed on April 13, also included blood alcohol content (BAC) results. Authorities said Proehl’s BAC was 0.115 on January 30 above the legal limit of 0.08.

Investigators said Proehl told officers he had only two tall beers a couple of hours before the crash.

Proehl initially told police he went to a restaurant with his wife, but later appeared confused and was mumbling, according to the complaint.

Officers brought Proehl to the Ashwaubenon Public Safety garage to conduct a field sobriety test. During the process, police said "he became boisterous" and told officers “I don't really give a s---."

After Proehl refused to do a “one-leg test”, he demanded a lawyer and was arrested.

According to the complaint, Proehl also made statements about the crash, saying, “They drove in front of me, and I was like, you've got to be kidding,” and “They didn’t leave me anytime at the intersection.”

Police said Proehl continued to insist that he had just gotten the truck two months prior, telling an officer that he had gone all the way to California to buy it. According to the complaint, Proehl seemed “more concerned about his truck being involved in an accident than how the occupants from the other vehicle were doing.”

The fatal collision was captured on surveillance video. A Toyota Corolla carrying Bishop and her father was seen waiting at a green light to make a left turn at the intersection. When the signal changed, other vehicles slowed. However, Proehl’s vehicle was seen traveling at a significantly higher speed moments before the impact.

Court records show Proehl was previously charged with OWI in 2022. The case remains open.

Proehl was scheduled to appear in court on April 13, the same day as his arraignment.
