A 24-year-old man has been booked for fatally shooting his girlfriend.

A 24-year-old man, Austin Doucette, is accused of murdering his long-term girlfriend, Mikayla Rose DeSantis, 23, according to Maine State Police. The incident occurred at the Left Bank condominiums in Carrabassett Valley, a tiny town located some 120 miles north of Portland.

Day of Incident

On March 8 at around 7:30 p.m., a 911 call was placed by Doucette. The Franklin County Regional Communications Centre filed the report about the shooting and the response of the state police.

Paramedics met DeSantis and Doucette along Route 27 and found DeSantis suffering from gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a Maine Health Franklin Hospital in Farmington, then airlifted via helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she succumbed to her injuries.

According to the court documents obtained by Portland-based CBS affiliate WGME, Doucette himself placed the emergency call. Police describe Doucette as “very hysterical throughout the phone call as he was yelling and shouting.”

“I can't believe I did this,” the caller said, according to police.

Doucette then even went on to say, “I’m sorry, babe,” while remaining on the call.

The 911 Calls

Doucette, also mentioned a gun and said it had accidentally gone off, according to the law enforcement agency. He allegedly told the dispatcher that he was leaving with the victim to get aid. Moments later, the first call was disconnected.

A couple of minutes later, Doucette called again, “My girlfriend has a gunshot wound,” he told the dispatcher during the second call, adding, “It accidentally went off.” The narrative of an accident occurred consistently in both calls.

He identified the victim by her name and said that she was shot in the abdominal area. “I would never do this,” he allegedly told the dispatcher, adding, “I don't want to go to jail.”

Investigations Revealed

When law enforcement first arrived at the residence, Doucette was speeding away from the scene, according to police. He was arrested during a traffic stop the night after the shooting.

Both Doucette and DeSantis worked together at Sugarloaf Mountain ski resort and hailed from Connecticut.

Inside Doucette’s car, Carrabassett Valley Police officers found reddish-brown stains on the back seat, along with a receipt and a cell phone, according to the law enforcement. Doucette later said the phone likely belonged to DeSantis.
