A man in Maryland is accused of stealing a forklift from a home improvement store and then running down a 73-year-old woman who had been sleeping in her car, killing her.

On July 2, witnesses told deputies that someone broke into a Lowe’s home improvement store in Waldorf and stole a forklift, according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

Police found the forklift less than a mile away in a Home Depot parking lot. Deputies said it was parked atop the body of Gloristine Pinkney.

Investigators determined Bryce Caleb Timothy Brown, 20, rammed the forklift into Pinkney’s car for “unknown reasons.” The victim then got out of her vehicle and was trying to run away on foot, but Brown allegedly chased her down and ran her over, authorities said.

Police said that after pursuing leads, they were able to positively identify Brown as the suspect.

According to officials, Pinkney was found dead at the scene, while Brown fled the scene in Pinkney’s vehicle. Police later found the car near the suspect’s home.

Charles County Sheriff’s spokesperson Diane Richardson told WBAL-TV, “This is absolutely a tragic story. It’s bizarre. We don’t know why the suspect did this, we’re still trying to figure that out. I don’t know if we’ll ever get an answer. The victim wasn’t doing anything but sleeping in her vehicle.”

Authorities said there was no evidence showing that Brown and Pinkney knew each other and it appears to be a random attack.

Brown was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, assault and theft. He is being held without bond.
