A student group associated with Turning Point USA (TPUSA) has come under scrutiny following an event held at a high school in Maryland in December. After the event drew criticism, community members and students began speaking publicly.

The issue was raised during a February 12 school board meeting, where a community member identified as Nancy voiced what she described as “serious concern” about the TPUSA-affiliated gathering.

A student who serves as president of Calvert County Club America (CCCA) first addressed the board to defend the event and the organization.

He said the group imposed restrictions after facing online backlash, including limiting access to adults who were not known to the organizers and were neither volunteers nor parents of participating students. He also emphasized that parental consent had been obtained for all student attendees.

“We have been accused of many things. We have been accused of grooming children… an allegation that a random unnamed man was president of our group and had certain felony charges. I'm the president of the group. I'm 17, I'm a minor. I can't groom children because I am a child. I don't have any felony charges or convictions,” the student said, as per a report on Fox News.

The student said that while CCCA is affiliated with TPUSA, it operates independently as a 501(c)(3) organization and is not part of the state’s public school system.

Nancy’s Take

Nancy then addressed the board, outlining her objections to the event and framing her concerns around student safety and oversight.

“While community building opportunities for students are important, this event raises serious concerns related to student safety, parental rights and governance oversight,” she said. Nancy alleged that parents and legal guardians were not permitted to attend the student-focused gathering.

“Excluding parents and guardians from a student-focused event creates a lack of transparency and undermines established best practices for youth safety,” she continued, adding that such activities should be subject to supervision and background checks.

“Students are widely recognized as a vulnerable population, they are in critical developmental stages, and especially susceptible to influence,” she said.

Nancy concluded her remarks by stating, “All Board of Education members in this room are mandated reporters under state law, as I am. Based on the circumstances surrounding this event, a report was made to Child Protective Services.”

What’s the Controversy?

The controversy comes as TPUSA continues efforts to expand its presence on high school and college campuses nationwide following the assassination of its founder, Charlie Kirk. His wife, Erika Kirk, told Fox News host Shannon Bream in December that the organization plans to resume its campus activities, particularly at colleges.

“We are not afraid,” she said, noting that TPUSA would continue hosting “Prove Me Wrong”–style debates, according to Fox.

On September 10, 2025, Charlie Kirk was fatally shot by a rooftop sniper while speaking at a TPUSA debate event at Utah Valley University. His assassination drew international attention and condemnation of political violence.
