Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three young children, is ready to admit to the crime in writing. Her defense attorney has filed a motion in the court, requesting to split her upcoming trial into two parts. The attorney, Kevin Reddington, says Clancy is willing to formally stipulate to her involvement in the killings, so that the trial’s focus shifts entirely on her mental state.

The accused plans to use an insanity defense, claiming that she was struggling with postpartum psychosis when she allegedly killed her children. If the court upholds her insanity defense, Clancy could avoid going to prison but would have to be committed to a mental institution.

Clancy Allegedly Strangled Her Kids to Death

The incident took place on January 24, 2024, when 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan were found strangled to death at their home in Duxbury. Clancy allegedly used exercise bands to kill her children, and then jumped out of a second-floor window to take her own life.

She survived the injuries but was left paralyzed from the chest down. Prosecutors argue that it was a premeditated murder, as Clancy sent her husband, Patrick Clancy, out of the house to pick up dinner. On the other hand, Clancy has blamed her poor mental health condition for the crime, claiming she heard voices in her head that told her to murder her kids.

The accused has also filed a lawsuit against her medical providers, citing that they misdiagnosed her. Clancy, a former nurse, says she was suffering from bipolar disorder, but doctors incorrectly treated her for general anxiety and depression.

According to her, she was prescribed over a dozen psychiatric drugs within a span of months, which triggered a psychotic episode that led to the tragedy. Patrick has also accused the same medical providers of gross negligence and filed a suit for wrongful death.

Clancy is facing charges of three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation or suffocation. Notably, she has not decided to plead guilty to the charges but will only formally stipulate to the murders.

Clancy’s Trial is Scheduled for July 2026

Her trial is set to begin July 20, 2026, in Plymouth Superior Court. Reddington tried to get the trial split into two earlier as well, but Judge William Sullivan denied the motion last week. “A single trial of all issues will be the most efficient and least confusing way to present this case to a jury,” Sullivan said in his ruling.

Clancy has agreed to admit to the crime in a bid to renew the request. Reddington wrote in the new filing, “[The death of the children] is not a live issue, and the defendant is willing to stipulate formally in writing to her involvement in the underlying conduct resulting in the death of the three children.”

“With that understanding, the defendant submits that the only live issue for consideration at trial would be the defendant’s state of mind as it relates to the defense of lack of criminal responsibility,” Reddington added. The court has yet to make a decision on the filing.
