An experienced metal detectorist from Somerset, England, has stumbled upon what is believed to be the country's largest gold nugget, aptly named Hiro's Nugget.

The discovery unfolded in the picturesque Shropshire Hills near the Welsh border in May 2023, adding a new chapter to the annals of treasure hunting lore.

Despite facing odds stacked against Richard Brock — a malfunctioning metal detector and tardy arrival — the treasure hunter's persistence paid off handsomely. Arriving late to the dig site, Brock's equipment was far from ideal, with one detector dying immediately and another barely functional. Undeterred, he pressed on.

As other enthusiasts equipped with state-of-the-art gear scoured the terrain, Brock's humble apparatus unexpectedly signaled something beneath the earth's surface.

Initially dismissing it as mere debris, Brock's intuition led him to unearth a treasure trove — Hiro's Nugget — nestled inches below ground level.

In disbelief, Brock recounted the serendipitous moment: "I couldn't believe it. I turned up late, was only there a matter of minutes, and this treasure hunting expedition was supposed to last all day."

His discovery, weighing a remarkable 2.3 ounces, defied expectations and captured the attention of enthusiasts worldwide.

The nugget, roughly the size of a British 50 pence piece, has sparked a bidding frenzy since its unveiling.
