Diani Gomez Sanchez, 16, was reported missing around 8:30 p.m., May 15, after she did not return home from a 6 a.m. jog.

Miami Police responded to a call from Sanchez’s uncle, who found her lifeless body, along with her possessions and some clothing scattered around the north side of the causeway near Pelican Harbor Marina the next day.

Miami Fire Rescue responded and pronounced Sanchez dead on the scene.

Miami Police Traffic Homicide Detectives arrested Jose Fimia, after a sergeant reportedly noticed a silver Toyota Corolla, that he owned, with a damaged windshield, a broken headlight and scratched paint on the side of the vehicle parked about a mile from Sanchez’s body.

Police detained and interviewed Fimia, and held him for as long as they could on May 18, but ultimately let him go due a lack of evidence at the time, according to the Miami Herald.

A witness told police they saw Fimia’s car parked near a dumpster with what appeared to be blood and hair on its broken windshield, and later spotted Fimia pacing around the car. He was also reportedly seen fixing his damaged tire, with the help of his sister. Police said they found the damaged tire in the trunk of the car, and all of the hubcaps were reportedly missing.
