Man fatally shot at rowdy July 4 celebration ‘involving fireworks, alcohol and drugs,’ police say

A late-night Fourth of July celebration in Michigan turned deadly after two men got into a physical altercation and then grabbed their guns, police said.

Around 1 a.m. on July 5, Joseph Olceski, 47, and a 50-year-old man were at a home in Chesterfield Township, where police said neighbors and friends had gathered for a party “involving fireworks, alcohol and drugs.”

According to a neighborhood resident, around eight people attended the celebration, which grew rowdy, Macomb Daily reported.

Olceski allegedly shot the victim, whose name they have not released, in the home’s front yard and he was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Police arrested the suspect and booked him into the Macomb County Jail. He currently faces charges of second-degree homicide and using a firearm during the commission of a felony and is being held on a $250,000 bond. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for July 15.

If convicted of the charges against him, Olceski faces up to life in prison and could be eligible for parole after 15 years.

A 48-year-old man was also arrested in connection with the incident but later released without criminal charges.
