Michigan man admits to stabbing estranged wife in neck while she was sleeping: police

A 43-year-old Michigan man admitted to police that he stabbed his estranged wife multiple times while she was sleeping, authorities claimed.

Now, the man has been charged in connection to her murder.

On Jan. 9, 37-year-old Melissa Lain was stabbed multiple times in her neck when police arrived at her Kalamazoo area house and found her covered in blood on the bedroom floor, police said. They also found a kitchen knife covered in blood nearby.

According to authorities, one of Melissa’s children called 911 after finding out their mother had been stabbed. The child said David Lain, 43, left the home in a white van around 1:45 a.m.

News Channel 3 reported a family member and cousin also called 911 to report that David Lain had called them and confessed to the killing.

Melissa Lain was taken to a local hospital and she died hours later from her injuries, police said. An autopsy report revealed she died from multiple sharp wound injuries.

David Lain was found in the white van traveling down I-94, police said. He waived his Miranda rights and admitted to stabbing Melissa Lain several times in the neck as she slept, police said.

Two months before her murder, court records show Melissa Lain filed for divorce from David Lain, officials said. They were married for 10 years and had one child together.

On Oct. 29, 2021, Melissa was given full legal and physical custody of their child.

On the night of the murder, police said there were three children in the home, all uninjured, and they have been placed with family.

David Lain was denied bond and is set to appear for his probable cause hearing on Jan. 19, officials said.
