On Sept. 20, 2021, police say the driver, 29-year-old Colby Martin, hit the victim, 64-year-old Melody Rohrer, while she was near the Oak Shores Campground in Hamilton Township.

After hitting Rohrer, police said Martin then moved the body to a wooded area where he allegedly committed the sexual acts.

The next day, investigators found Martin at a Walmart store, as they saw his 2013 Ford F-150 had severe front-end damage.

Martin led authorities to the site of the crime, according to reports. He was arrested at that time and charged with manslaughter and concealing a body, officials said. He was freed on a $300,000 bond.

As the investigation continued, authorities said they examined DNA evidence and Martin’s online search history, which included pornography involving dead or unconscious women, the New York Post reported.

Because of the new evidence, officials said they added a murder charge to Martin. He was recently arrested at his girlfriend’s house in Big Rapids and booked into the Van Buren County Jail with no bond.

Martin’s attorney, Jim Mequio, told the New York Post, “We’re still waiting for reports and more evidence from the prosecutor’s office. From a legal standpoint, I’m not seeing the increase in charges will be justified.”

The investigation into the case is ongoing.
