A Michigan man with a significant online presence for exposing individuals suspected of being sexual predators was fatally shot during a confrontation with two teenagers, according to police.

On Sept. 29, Robert Wayne Lee, 40, who was known as Boopac Shakur, was at a Pontiac restaurant when he confronted two teenage males, ages 17 and 18, and accused one of being a pedophile, according to the Detroit Free Press.

During the confrontation, Lee allegedly punched one of the teenagers, who then took out a knife while the other teen pulled a gun on Lee and shot him several times, authorities said.

The teenagers reportedly fled the restaurant, but police were able to apprehend them.

Lee was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries, officials said.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said the teenager Lee "was mostly focused on and talking to and became heated with was not the individual who shot him."

Bouchard claimed that "it was the other person on the opposite side of the table,” according to WJBK.

The Detroit Free Press reported the gunman was allegedly the 17-year-old boy.

Authorities have not released the names of the two suspects and the case has been turned over to prosecutors for potential charges.

Lee was affiliated with Dads Against Predators and would pose online as a 15-year-old girl to expose suspected offenders on Facebook and Instagram, the Free Press reported.

Authorities said his sting operations have resulted in criminal charges against several men.

Bouchard said people “often underestimate the potential for violence confronting a suspected predator."

He explained, "They feel trapped and often lash out violently."
