Mom Ignored Toddler ‘Napping’ for 7 Hours Before 1-Year-Old Suffocated in Crib, Cops Say

The accused did not check on the child for approximately seven hours on November 14, 2025.
An Evansville mother has been arrested after allegedly placing her one-year-old son in an unsafe sleeping environment that resulted in his death. Amirah Moodie, 25, has been charged with one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, according to court documents obtained by Law & Crime.
What Happened?
Deputies from the Evansville Police Department were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 1600 block of Cass Court on November 14, 2025, after a 911 call reporting a “medical emergency.”
The caller, Moodie, told dispatchers that her son, Isais Pascual-Hernandez, was not waking up and said that “he was stiff.”
When first responders arrived, they attempted life-saving measures but determined the child was “beyond help.” Police also reported that the home was extremely untidy, with food, trash and cat litter scattered throughout.

According to the arrest affidavit, the child’s bedroom had a Pack ‘n Play crib with an “oversized mattress placed inside”.
“The mattress went from one end of the Pack ‘n Play stretching across to the other end. The excess was folded and wedged against the side of the crib making an L-shape. An oversized waterproof sheet was located inside the crib and collected,” according to the affidavit.
“The sheet was lined with an impermeable rubber-type backing. The sheet was unsafe and created a suffocation hazard.”
Moodie claimed she put Isais down at about 6 p.m. the previous night, saying he slept through the night and woke up at about 6 a.m., the following morning. Shortly afterward, the child’s father left for work, and Moodie allegedly took a THC gummy because she was “stressed about finances”.
She placed him in a Pack ’n Play crib with a bottle at around 9 a.m., stating that “he did not fight the nap.” She then went to her room, where she said she drifted in and out of sleep for several hours.
She got out of bed to check on him around 4 p.m. and found him motionless. “[Moodie] saw the black sheet was wrapped around his head a few times (two or three) and [Moodie] struggled to unwrap his head. [Moodie] stated Isais had marks on his neck and his lips were blue,” the affidavit states.
“[Moodie] stated the fitted sheet is bigger than the mattress so she tries to tuck in but he does pull it off often.”
Cause of Death Disclosed
According to autopsy reports obtained by Law and Crime, Isais died as a result of “asphyxia due to suffocation by bedding (unsafe sleep), with possible contribution by ligature strangulation”.
People on social media expressed shock and frustration over the incident. “Should not be eating gummies and laying around without a care in the world when u have a baby to take care of! Yes...this is neglect!” one individual wrote.
Another commenter questioned the circumstances, writing, “How does an oversized mattress get wrapped around an infant’s head several times? I have 3 kids and I still don’t know what an oversized mattress is?”
Moodie is being held at the Vanderburgh County Jail without bond. Her next court hearing is set for March 26.
