Mom Of Seven And Her Teenager Son Killed By Teen After Dispute Over Proposed Soccer Match

Suspect booked for murder of a woman and son over a soccer match dispute
A Kent County prosecutor charged an 18-year-old with the murders of another teenager and his mother on May 7. The incident unfolded outside a school in the Grand Rapids area, leaving fellow students in shock after the tragedy.
The suspect allegedly got into a heated altercation with the victim and his mother, which authorities said was the motive for the killings. The grieving family has since set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to help cover the victims’ funeral expenses.
Teenager Kills Woman And Son Over A Soccer Game Issue
Rafael Martinez-Lopez killed 15-year-old Jeremiah Cuevas-Griffin and his mother, Savanah Villarreal, before fleeing from the crime scene. As per the prosecutor, the suspect approached a group of school kids at around 6:40 p.m. The children were playing at a park near the Southwest Elementary Academia Bilingüe.
Lopez allegedly asked them to play soccer, but was unexpectedly turned away by the group. It sparked rage, and he got into a verbal altercation with the kids, including Griffin. The suspect reportedly demanded a fight, to which Griffin agreed. As things escalated, it was Villarreal who intervened and came to her son’s defense.
Enraged by the son and his mother, Lopez ended up shooting them both dead. Surveillance camera footage shows that the suspect opened fire even before the proposed fight began. He reportedly did not like the way that the group refused a game of soccer with him. After gunning down the two people, Lopez immediately fled the scene.
