A Louisiana mother is accused of throwing her two young children off a bridge, killing a 8-month infant son and leaving a second boy, 5, seriously injured.
On the morning of Sept. 24, Ureka Black, 32, allegedly threw the boys into Cross Lake. Shreveport police marine patrol officers recovered the baby’s body following a report of a small child spotted in the water near the Cross Lake Bridge, KLFY-TV reported.
The older boy, who had just celebrated his birthday one day before the incident, was then located in the water and rescued. He was rushed to LSU Oschner Health Shreveport and is expected to survive.
According to KLFY-TV, the boy allegedly provided investigators with information that led them to identify his mother as a suspect.
Black was taken into custody in Wascom, Harrison County, Texas, and extradited to Shreveport, where she facesone count each of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder, online records show. No bail has been set.
Police were able to locate Black’s third child, who was unharmed.
“This is a tragedy and we ask for prayers for the children and their family,” Shreveport Police Sgt. Angie Wilhite said, KLFY-TV reported. “Unfortunately, there’s no happy ending to this, but we do have the suspect in custody.”
Black has a long criminal history dating back to 2007, including charges of prostitution, drug possession and aggravated arson, according to WAFB.
