A central Indiana man has been convicted of murdering his girlfriend in her home while her two-year-old baby was inside, then fleeing in her car to New England.

A jury found Alexander Ortiz, 37, guilty April 11 of fatally stabbing Andrea Aguirre on December 21, 2021.

Court documents reviewed by WXIN-TV show Aguirre's former husband found her body. She was stabbed several times in the face.

The 2-year-old child in the home was not hurt but wore a shirt covered with Aguirre's blood.

Ortiz was arrested eight days later at a rest stop in Massachusetts.

A friend of Aguirre told authorities that Ortiz moved in with her, but he had a history of abusing her. Aguirre reportedly wanted to break off the relationship.

Ortiz claimed on the witness stand that he did not murder Aguirre. But other evidence indicated he did online searches for “Aguirre death” while on the run, even before a newspaper posted a story on the case.

The Anderson Herald-Bulletin reported a jury needed only 40 minutes to convict Ortiz of murder as well as fraud for using her credit cards after killing her.

Ortiz is scheduled to be sentenced May 5.
