In a new twist in the Nancy Guthrie case, reports suggest that one of the ransom notes received early in the investigation may have been an apology note. The 84-year-old woman was reported missing from her Catalina Foothills home on February 1.

Shortly after, different media houses obtained ransom notes from alleged kidnappers, who sought $6 million in bitcoin. Nancy Guthrie' daughter, Today host Savannah Guthrie, recently acknowledged in an interview that the family believes at least two of the ransom notes were real.

Sources Say One of the Ransom Notes was an Apology Letter

Sources say one of the ransom notes was an apology letter.

Experts have now warned that one of these ransom notes may have been an apology letter. According to sources cited by an X account Nerdy_Addict, the alleged kidnappers sent an apology letter to her family, stating that they did not realize how fragile her health was. The letter allegedly confirmed a tragic development by stating that Nancy Guthrie had ‘gone to be with God.’

Journalist Megyn Kelly discussed the report during a recent episode of her show and said, “Many of us sat and said, ‘That sounds like they believe Nancy is no longer alive.’ That would dovetail with Nerdy’s reporting that the second ransom note was more of an apology, but they had Nancy’s body and said she’s gone to be with God. This is all speculation.”

Kelly added that this could also be the reason why the Guthrie family did not pay ransom. She asked, “Why didn’t the Guthrie family ever pay a ransom if they believed, as Savannah told us yesterday, that two of those ransom notes they received were authentic? Was there something in the second note that made them believe it was fruitless to pay money to the kidnapper?”

In earlier statements, the Guthrie siblings said it is possible that their mother is no longer alive, but they are still hoping for a miracle. The family has also made comments about wanting to ‘celebrate Nancy Guthrie's life’ and wanting to ‘bring her back to her final resting place.’

However, neither investigators nor the family has officially confirmed whether any ransom note served as an apology letter. Former FBI special agents James Hamilton and Maureen O’Connell, who appeared on Kelly’s show, also gave their opinions about Nancy Guthrie's possible fate.

Hamilton noted that the ransom notes contained vague information about Guthrie’s health that was already publicly available. The agent opined that the letters could have been sent by scammers instead of actual kidnappers.

“All I’m hearing, Megyn, is what scam artists do. They prey upon grief. They prey upon your vulnerability. They’re saying anything they can to get paid. It really doesn’t move the needle a lot for me,” Hamilton said.

On the other hand, O’Connell pointed out that the FBI could have barred the family from paying ransom without proof of life. “I think that the FBI was probably telling her, ‘Without proof of life, do not pay these people. It will never end. ‘And if they can’t provide proof of life, then we could very well be dealing with the wrong people,’” O’Connell stated.

After almost two months of investigation, detectives have not been able to crack the case. Despite thousands of clues and surveillance footage of a masked man being released to the public, the suspect remains unidentified.
