On April 17, hopes of a breakthrough in the Nancy Guthrie disappearance case grew after reports emerged that a suspect had been arrested. Journalist Nancy Grace claimed on her podcast, Crime Stories, that investigators had detained a person south of Tucson.

The clip went viral on social media, and many began hoping that Guthrie could finally be found more than two months after her disappearance. However, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos later addressed Grace’s claims and put all the speculation to rest. He confirmed that no suspect had been arrested, and the reports were mere rumors.

Journalist claimed a suspect had been detained in the Nancy Guthrie case.

During the April 17 episode of her podcast, Grace spoke with investigative reporter Dave Mack. She discussed a report from her sources claiming that a suspect had been detained for questioning.

Grace said the detention occurred in the same area where another person was detained in February, but was released a few hours later. “A person south of Tucson had been detained for questioning,” Grace said.

“Isn’t that the same general area where someone was detained before, several weeks ago, nearly at the get-go? And everyone was so happy that maybe the case had been resolved, and then it turned out the person was released,” she said.

Mack then chimed in, noting that there could finally be a major development in the case. “It appears that we are right back in that same general area as we had been before. And now, we’re being led to the trough: a possible new suspect, possible new information. But Pima County not jumping in. Nobody providing us with a lot of information,” he said.

When asked whether a suspect had been detained in connection with Guthrie’s disappearance, Nanos had a one-word response: ‘Nope.’ After Grace’s podcast sparked speculations, Fox News Digital reporter Michael Ruiz cleared the air.

He took to X and wrote, “Sheriff Nanos’ one-word reply when asked about new reports that another person of interest has been detained in the Nancy Guthrie case: 'Nope.’ Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer shared a similar update on X.

She wrote, “According to Sheriff Nanos, no one was detained last night in Nancy’s case despite some people in social media reporting this.”

No arrests have been made in the Guthrie case despite the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI working together for over two months to identify suspects.

The FBI is now reportedly using advanced technology to analyze DNA evidence collected from Guthrie’s home. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department previously got the sample tested at a private lab, which did not yield any significant results.

“PCSD has worked with the FBI since the beginning of the Guthrie investigation. This is not new information. The private lab we utilize in Florida continues to share information with the FBI lab & other partner labs across the country. DNA analysis remains ongoing,” Nanos said.
