As Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts remain unknown almost four months after her disappearance, a former FBI agent has opened up about what could have happened to the 84-year-old woman. Nancy, the mother of Savannah Guthrie, was allegedly abducted from her home in the middle of the night on February 1.

Despite a joint investigation by the Pima County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI, no suspects have been arrested so far. Now, retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, who has closely followed the case, has explained four theories about who might have kidnapped Nancy and why.

Former FBI agent believes Nancy Guthrie is dead.

Coffindaffer based her theories on the assumption that Nancy might already be dead. According to her, the first possibility is that the abduction was a "wrench attack", a method criminals use to coerce cryptocurrency holders into transferring funds.

The ex-agent said that owing to Savannah Guthrie's wealth, a criminal group might have targeted her mother to obtain money. “With a plethora of photos of Nancy, her home, even her bedroom, Nancy was a ripe target for an easy abduction,” she wrote.

However, Coffindaffer believes their plan went awry because Nancy died during her kidnapping. But the abductors still attempted to extort money by sending ransom notes, hoping that Nancy’s family would not ask for proof of her life.

Coffindaffer’s second theory states that one of Nancy’s family members planned to murder her and staged it as a kidnapping. The motive behind the crime could be financial or personal. The agent pointed out that though the immediate family, including Nancy’s daughter Annie and son-in-law Tommasco Cioni, have already been cleared of any suspicion, an extended family member may have been involved in the crime.

The third possibility is that a family friend or a handyman kidnapped Nancy for monetary gain. Coffindaffer cited the example of Heddy Braun, an 88-year-old woman who was also taken from her home in 2003. She was found alive after four days of search, and a family friend was exposed as the culprit.

Coffindaffer’s fourth theory suggests that Nancy was kidnapped as an act of revenge against her family. According to this theory, the culprit had no regard for Nancy’s life and was only interested in causing emotional and financial distress to her family.

“They wanted to strip of the family of money (thus ransom demand), cause severe emotional distress, and inflict damage on their reputations by publicly going forth with the demands knowing the ransom demand would not be paid causing much public scrutiny,” Coffindaffer wrote.

She added that the kidnapper caused further agony to the family by portraying Tommasco Cioni and Annie Guthrie as possible suspects. “This would be someone completely obsessed with torturing the Guthrie family; Someone who would risk it all to murder their matriarch,” Coffindaffer concluded.

However, none of these theories has been confirmed by officials as of now. Meanwhile, the search for Nancy continues with investigators now focused on obtaining results from DNA evidence.
