In 2017, Hector Arturo Campos fatally shot his neighbor, Ana Weed, 53, in the victim’s front yard in Spring.

According to family, Campos had lived in the same neighborhood as Weed for around 10 years and the pair were on friendly terms at one point.

In June 2016, trouble between the pair was sparked after Campos’ wife at the time took their baby daughter and allegedly left the country for Mexico, KRIV reported.

Family said in court that Campos was abusive and had arranged the vacation, but when he attempted to cancel it, Weed drove his wife and child to the airport so they could go without him.

Campos filed for divorce from his wife after the trip.

On Jan. 24, 2017, around seven months after his wife left, Campos confronted Weed in her front yard and the woman’s dog began barking at him as they argued, according to KRIV.

“Miss Weed's dog ran onto his lawn,” attorney Bill Odgen told the station, explaining that Weed went onto her neighbor’s property, got her dog and then returned to her own yard.

Campos, the lawyer said, then “walked across his driveway, his property, to the line, and shot her.”

Another neighbor who witnessed the incident held Campos at gunpoint until police could arrive.

Campos claimed to investigators that he was acting in self-defense when he killed Weed.

At the time of her murder, Weed had been wrapping a present for her grandson and was holding a roll of tape. Campos claimed she appeared to make a motion with the tape like she was going to put it around his neck and choke him.

Campos also alleged Weed pushed him.

A jury convicted Campos of murder in late June 2022. Earlier in the month, the victim’s family was awarded $70 million in a wrongful death verdict following a civil trial.

“I'm glad we got to see him shackled at the ankles and then cuffed. It was a reality check for him and his face just showed it,’ the victim’s brother, Arnold Aldrete, told KTRK-TV. “It made us happy. It gave us relief."

“Hector Campos is a violent and vengeful man who killed his neighbor simply because they did not get along,” Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said.

“Ana Weed, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother is dead, and her family is devastated because an angry man with a gun could not control himself,” she added.
