A white man in Michigan intentionally broke the law to demonstrate that racial bias exists in law enforcement. Lucas G.R. of Grand Rapids made the revelation before the city leaders at a commission meeting.

During a speech on February 24, Lucas said he conducted a social experiment in 2025. He removed the license plates from his vehicle before driving to work and drove around town without them for a week.

Da'Quain Johnson, a Black man, was shot by a Grand Rapids Police Officer on February 18.

Meanwhile, he passed through five different police jurisdictions. However, he was not stopped even once.

“Last year, working all the way across town 5 days a week, driving through four or five different police jurisdictions, I was never stopped or questioned once. But please do keep telling us that there's no racial or class bias in policing,” Lucas said.

According to him, his experiment showed that as a white man, it is easier for him to break the law and get away with it.

“I bet if I started riding my bike around with a gun on me, nobody would call,” he said.

Lucas shared his experience to highlight that racial bias still exists among law enforcement officials. He cited the case of Da'Quain Johnson, a Black man, who was shot by a Grand Rapids police officer on February 18.

Johnson, a 32-year-old father of three, was riding a bike when Grand Rapids Police Department officers asked him to stop. Police said Johnson had a firearm and refused to pull over. A K9 unit followed him, and a police dog eventually attacked him. As Johnson lay on the ground, an officer fired three shots.

Johnson died from gunshot wounds. Police said the officer fired in self-defense because Johnson had brandished a gun. However, body camera footage appears to conflict with this claim, as Johnson is not seen aiming a weapon at the officer. Authorities said they found a gun near his body.

Johnson’s Mother Questions the Police’s Actions

Johnson’s mother condemned the police's actions.

The incident sparked outrage among the public, and Johnson’s family is demanding justice. Johnson's mother, Angelica Johnson, questioned the police’s actions during a recent press conference. She said, “They say he was laying on the gun. He was pointing it. He was reaching for the gun. We can clearly see that he had no opportunity to reach for a gun or anything else.”

“But as I watched that movie over and over again, and I watched this dog attack my son over and over while two officers straddled his body, I’m still trying to figure out at what point he was a threat?” she said.

Lucas echoed similar sentiments during his speech and called for changes to how police dogs are used. “As a white guy from the South, I have to say that when I see a Black man running away while dogs are sicced on him, it is reminiscent of plantations of the Old South,” he said.

“I concur with those who've called for drastic change in the dog policy at GRPD.”
