A Hightstown, New Jersey, man flashed his high beams at an innocent mother on the highway. Moments later, her passenger heard a “bang.”

She was shot. Her life was over. The man who pulled the trigger — on both the headlights and the gun — will spend the rest of his life in prison.

A jury found Kader Mustafa, 40, guilty last week for the shooting death of Sciasia Calhoun. Mustafa was convicted of murder, two counts of endangering the welfare of another person, two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon and one count of possession of a weapon of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

On May 3, 2018, Calhoun headed west on Route 33, nearby Halls Mill Road exit in New Jersey, while driving behind a white Chevrolet Impala with tinted windows. The 24-year-old mother was in the car with her then 1-year-old daughter and boyfriend.

According to NJ.com, initially, Calhoun headed east towards Neptune, New Jersey, but her headlights stopped working. Hence, she turned around and headed west.

After passing Mustafa’s Impala, the defendant drove behind Calhoun for seven minutes, flashing his high beams. As a result, Calhoun’s boyfriend suggested she exited the highway when he heard a bang, and his girlfriend slumped, bleeding on his lap.

Later, a Manalapan patrol officer spotted the white Impala and took note of the plate number.

Calhoun was rushed to Freehold Township’s CentraState Medical Center, where she died an hour later. Her boyfriend and her daughter were not hurt.

Mustafa was arrested the following day while driving the Impala with his girlfriend in the passenger seat. Police retrieved a .38 caliber revolver and a .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun from the vehicle. In addition, the defendant’s girlfriend told investigators she had been with him the night before and had witnessed the shooting.

“This was a chilling, senseless crime, committed against a total stranger in the dead of night, in front of the victim’s horrified boyfriend and young child. We thank the jury for their service and are deeply gratified to know that while today’s verdict can’t bring Sciasia Calhoun back, this defendant will be kept off the streets and brought to justice for his actions,” stated Acting Prosecutor Lori Linskey, according to Asbury Park Press.

In 2018, there were two other similar incidents of highway shootings in Monmouth County within a spate of two months. One of them included the killing of a Neptune resident while driving on Route 18 in Colts Neck, New Jersey. However, Mustafa’s case was not related to any other highway shooting.

Mustafa faces a minimum of 30 years with the possibility of parole to life in prison without parole.He is scheduled for sentencing on Jan. 7.
