New Jersey man killed his ex-fiance and then died by suicide

The victim has been identified as Tomeka Kamwani, 41. According to NJ.com, the suspect entered her home in the 300 block of Broad Street in the early hours of March 28 and shot her three times. The Woolwich Township Police Department responded to a call about the shooting and arrived at the scene and found her dead.

The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was also found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to NJ.com, the man was facing a restraining order over an incident in February.

As reported by the outlet, the suspect punched Kamwani in the face. The incident happened a week after the victim obtained a restraining order against her ex-fiancée. However, he ignored it and was arrested for assaulting the woman. A prosecutor revealed that after he punched Kamwani, he refused to leave her home.

The suspect even threatened to kill her if she informed the police. NJ.com reported that even after violating the restraining order and assaulting her, a judge denied the prosecution's request to keep him in custody until trial. He was released on bond.

According to a recording of the bond hearing obtained by the outlet, the prosecutor said, "She claimed that the defendant laughed and said she needs to put more locks on the door and showed her a card that he used to break into the residence."

Kamwani is survived by her four children

In a conversation with WCAU, Kamwani's aunt, Barbera Brooks Faltz, said: "It's a shame he had to do that. That's about all I can think about: Why would he want to do that? People break up."

"We thought he was a good person, and when this happened, I couldn't believe it, and I still don't want to believe it," the woman said. A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise funds for the victim's children.

The description of the page read, "On Saturday, March 28, our community lost a beautiful soul, Tomeka P. Kamwani (Brooks), to domestic violence. A loving mother, daughter, sister, and friend, Tomeka's life was taken far too soon, leaving behind the center of her world, her four children: Gavyn, Aiden, Bryson, and Ava."

"Tomeka was the kind of mother who poured everything into her children. They were her joy, her purpose, and the reason she showed up every single day with strength and love. Anyone who knew her knew how deeply she adored them," it added.

The family also held a vigil in Kamwani's honor.
