An Albuquerque, New Mexico, woman claims she meant to stab the door and not her girlfriend after a fight in a motel room, police said.
The victim is dead after the incident and the alleged attacker now faces criminal charges.
Albuquerque Police were called to a motel after a call on April 11 regarding a stabbing, authorities said.
When officers arrived, they found one woman dead and Mary Jane Luna-Ruybal, 31, who claimed to be the victim’s girlfriend, police said.
Police questioned Ruybal and she admitted that she and the victim got into a fight, but that she didn’t mean to stab her, as reported by KRQE.
Ruybal stated that she meant to stab the door, but the victim stepped in front of her, police said.
Accident or not, Ruybal was arrested and is charged with first-degree murder, police said.
