Earlier this week, reports suggested that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer who shot and killed Renee Nicole Good in Minnesota had been reinstated in another state. According to media outlet PunchUp, the officer, Jonathan Ross, was placed on administrative leave for only three days after Good’s death before being transferred to a different state.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has now reacted to the report, announcing that the ICE agent would not be allowed to serve in her state. The Democratic leader wrote a letter to Border Czar Tom Homan on April 29, seeking answers about Ross’ reinstatement.

New York Governor says Jonathan Ross will not be allowed to serve in her state.

“I write to you today deeply troubled by reports that Jonathan Ross, the agent who shot Ms. Good three times, has been quietly reassigned to another state. More troubling are reports that Ross was only placed on administrative leave for three days after shooting an American citizen,” Hochul wrote in the letter.

The Governor argued that ICE agents misused their powers during the immigration crackdown in Minnesota. She also referred to the death of Alex Pretti, a nurse who was shot dead by Border Patrol agents just a few days after Good's death.

Hochul demanded that, if Ross has been redeployed in New York, he be removed until an independent investigation into Good’s death is conducted. “I am formally requesting confirmation that Jonathan Ross has not been reassigned to work in New York State,” she wrote

“If Jonathan Ross has been reassigned to work in New York, I demand that he be immediately removed and not redeployed unless cleared after a full, independent investigation. I have no confidence that Ross can be trusted to safely interact with the public. Nor should you,” the Governor concluded.

Renee Good, 37, was a U.S. citizen who was observing ICE enforcement activities in her neighborhood on January 7, 2026. She had stopped her car sideways on the one-way Portland Avenue street when ICE agents approached her and told her to get out of her vehicle.

When Good refused, one agent tried to open the car door himself. The woman then briefly reversed and tried to drive away, but her car seemed to brush against Ross. The agent then drew his weapon and fired three shots at Good. She died on the spot. Following the shooting, Ross was heard calling her a ‘‘f—--- b—-’ on camera.

Federal officials called Good a ‘domestic terrorist’ even though she was unarmed during her death. Kristi Noem, who served as Homeland Security Secretary at the time, maintained that Ross acted in self-defense and was only following his training protocol. She also claimed that Good had ‘weaponized’ her vehicle and was trying to run over ICE agents.

Despite nationwide protests, the Department of Justice (DOJ) declined to open a criminal civil rights investigation into Ross. ICE officials have not confirmed whether the agent was reinstated and where he was posted following the shooting.
