A 10-year-old boy found bruised and cut inside a housing complex in Harlem, New York, died of fatal child abuse syndrome, according to media reports.
On Saturday, Ayden Wolfe was found unconscious and unresponsive in the apartment and died later at the hospital.
While at the hospital, investigators were told that Wolfe’s death was caused by fatal child abuse syndrome. NYPD Chief of Department Rodney Harrison said the boy was found with extensive bruising to his face, extremities and all over his body, according to PIX.
Some of the injuries were recent, while some were old.
Ryan Cato, 34, was arrested and charged on Sunday with murder and endangering the welfare of a child. Cato is the boyfriend of Wolfe’s mother.
Cato was the one who called 911, as he told police he found Wolfe unconscious. Police have not interviewed Wolfe’s mother.
However, authorities said Wolfe’s mother had one prior case with child services in 2010, soon after Wolfe was born. There were no other children or siblings inside the house at the time of that incident.
Cato has three previous arrests, which include one in Brooklyn for assaulting the mother of his children on Dec. 29, 2020.
The Brooklyn District Attorney’s office stated that Cato’s children, ages 12 and 6, were in the room when Cato struck their mother several times in the face and choked her, according to reports.
