A New York City mother has died and her two children were critically injured after her roommate allegedly attacked them with a hammer, according to reports.

Around 2 p.m. on Aug. 23, officers were called to a second-floor apartment in Brooklyn after a 911 call came in about an “assault in progress,” police said.

Once inside the apartment, officers found the injured mom, later identified as 43-year-old Zhao Zhao, and her 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter.

All three victims were taken to a nearby hospital, where the mother died and the two children remain in critical condition, authorities said.

At a news briefing, NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said the suspect, who had blood on him, was attempting to walk out of the building when police arrived and arrested him.

The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Liyong Ye, lives in another room of the small three-bedroom apartment with his 9-year-old son. Police said he has no prior arrests.

The third room in the apartment is rented by another person, authorities said.

Chell told reporters, “The incident I’m about to describe to you is a horrific and senseless act of violence which took the life of a married mother of two.”

Officials said they recovered a bloodied hammer in the building.
