A grandmother in Ohio has been arrested after she allegedly shot her 6-month-old grandchild in the head at close range, according to authorities.

Around 2 a.m. on Dec. 9, deputies responded to a residence in Liberty Township in reference to the shooting, according to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

At the scene, officers found the newborn victim with a gunshot wound to the head, authorities said. The baby was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

According to witnesses, the shooter allegedly was the victim’s grandmother, 43-year-old Mia Harris.

Harris reportedly fled the scene before deputies arrived, but they found her shortly after and she was taken into custody without incident, officials said.

Investigators determined Harris allegedly shot at other family members before shooting her own grandchild.

During a fight with other relatives, Harris “knowingly caused serious physical harm” to the baby “by breaking down a locked bedroom door after firing a handgun through it multiple times,” according to court documents obtained by WXIX-TV.

Harris allegedly tried to shoot the victim’s mother in the head, but missed, court records show.

The victim reportedly has undergone two surgeries and remains in critical condition, WXIX reported.

The incident was “one of the most disgusting, vile criminal acts I’ve ever seen, shooting a 6-month-old baby," Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said, according to WXIX. He added: "What makes it even worse is this is the baby’s grandmother. The baby is hanging on to life as we speak.”
