An Ohio dance instructor will spend years in prison after she opened fire at a New Year’s Eve party because she was angered that her ex-husband and current boyfriend were getting along.

Olivia Marie Clendenin, 28, was sentenced to 16 to 20 years in prison after a jury convicted her in early February of attempted murder and multiple related charges, according to Warren County Common Pleas Court Judge Robert Peeler.

What Happened

The incident occurred in the early hours of January 1, 2025, in Clearcreek Township, Ohio.

Authorities say deputies responded at about 5 a.m. to the 5500 block of Dearth Road after reports of a drive-by shooting. At the scene, they found a 29-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Investigators said Clendenin attended a party hosted by her boyfriend, who had invited several guests—including her ex-husband.

Clendenin became upset upon seeing the two men together and tried to persuade her ex-husband to leave. When he refused, she later returned with a .40-caliber handgun.

As she left the property, Clendenin drove across the front yard and fired eight shots toward the house.

Innocent Victim Hit

Both her ex-husband and boyfriend were inside at the time of the shooting. However, a man standing on the porch—who had no involvement in the dispute—was struck by gunfire.

“The victim had simply been invited to a New Year’s Eve party and found himself in the middle of Clendenin’s barrage of gunfire,” prosecutor David Fornshell said.

Crash and Arrest

After the shooting, Clendenin crashed her mother’s 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee a short distance away in the 3800 block of McLean Road in Franklin Township.

Authorities said she was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time of the offense.

Victim's Statement

“Clendenin may have started 2025 as a free person, but will spend the rest of 2026 and at a minimum the decade thereafter incarcerated,” Fornshell said. He added that she intended to target at least one of her romantic partners but instead nearly killed an innocent victim.

During Clendenin's sentencing hearing, the victim, Daniel Johnson, said, "On the day of the incident, I was attending a New Year's Day get together. I had been invited over and was sitting on the porch minding my business. The defendant was attempting to shoot at someone else, and I was the one who ended up being shot. In that moment, my life changed for reasons that have nothing to do with me."

Clendenin said she deeply cares about her family, friends and business. She added, “To Daniel, I am very, very glad that he is well after a difficult time he has been through, and I truly hope that he has a great future and I wish him nothing but the best in his future.”
