A Florida woman was arrested after a 3-month-old pit bull puppy she brought home the day before chewed off the fingers of her baby, who she left alone in a bassinet so she could take a shower, authorities said.

On Feb. 14, Chloe Wisniewski, 21, told police she was not feeling well and put the little girl in her bassinet before she went into the bathroom, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office said.

Wisniewski said she then turned on the shower but turned it back off again when she heard the baby girl scream, WBBH reported.

When she went back into the room, she found the 3-month-old pit bull puppy, Apollo, chewing on the baby’s hands. Wisniewski wrapped the baby’s hands in cloth and called 911.

The little girl was taken to a local hospital but then flown to Tampa General Hospital for treatment. Three fingers on the girl’s left hand were fully amputated and two fingers on her right hand were partially amputated.

Following a four-month-long investigation, Wisniewski recently was arrested and charged with child neglect, authorities said.

“It really was just sort of a bizarre, very unfortunate incident,” said Brian Jones, Division Manager at Charlotte County Animal Control.

Wisniewski told police there was “so much blood” that she couldn’t look at the baby’s fingers.

Apollo was taken to the Charlotte County Animal Control, WBBH reported.

“This really could happen with any breed,” Jones said.

Wisniewski has since bailed out of jail. Her family said the child is recovering well.

Apollo was quarantined as part of protocol following a bite. He passed the quarantine and was transferred to the Animal Welfare League, according to WBBH.
