Two men armed with assault rifles opened fire on a car in Washington D.C., striking a pregnant model and her baby girl’s father.

“This is a brazen act. It happened in the middle of the day,” said Assistant Chief of Patrol Andre Wright of the Metropolitan Police Department.

The incident occurred on June 15. Around 11:20 that morning, police said Samya Gill, 22, and her boyfriend were in their vehicle parked on the street when a white four-door sedan pulled up and the gunmen exited and began firing at them.

Gill’s boyfriend was struck but managed to flee the scene by driving the couple’s car to an intersection.

WJLA reported Gill, who is from Maryland, was then rushed to a hospital in the area and gave birth.

She died from her injuries and her infant is in critical condition, police said, noting Gill’s boyfriend suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives recovered surveillance camera images of the two suspects. One was wearing a white jacket and hoodie and the other was dressed in dark-colored clothing.

The search for the men continues, said police, who added they do not know the motive for the shooting but believe it was a targeted attack.

According to WJLA, Gill’s mother said her daughter modeled and ran an online clothing boutique before focusing on preparing for the arrival of her baby girl.

“She’s beautiful. I went to go see her last night and she’s just gorgeous,” the victim’s mother, who was not identified, told WJLA. “I just really hope they catch whoever did that to my daughter.”

A GoFundMe page notes the newborn girl is named Zailey.
