According to the Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves, the shooter was identified as Robert Dargon, 56, who also went by the name of Roberta Espocito. Investigators believe the attack unfolded quickly and targeted specific individuals. The evidence indicates a targeted act rather than random violence, Goncalves said. “This was a targeted incident,” Goncalves said during a briefing, adding that investigators have not found any broader threat. Authorities said the suspect and victims knew each other.
Police said an individual intervened during the shooting, limiting the number of casualties. Investigators credited the persons actions while continuing to review surveillance video and witness statements to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Emergency medical crew responded to the scene and transported the injured to hospitals while officers searched the arena to ensure no additional threats remained. Police recovered multiple firearms from the scene. Investigators have not said how the suspect brought the weapons into the building or whether a security screening system was in place.
The shooting sent shockwaves through the Rhode Island sports community. The Rhode Island Interscholastic League suspended upcoming athletic events.
Local leaders expressed grief and urged residents to support those affected. Rhode Island Governor Dan MacKee called the incident heart-breaking and pledged state support for the families. Detectives interviewed more than 100 witnesses inside and outside the arena. Officials said they will provide updates after forensic analysis concludes. For now the Pawtucket community mourns the lives lost and begins to recover from the night that turned into tragedy.
