This week, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina arrested Hurley D. Braddy Jr., 41, in connection to the case.

Around 11:40 a.m. on Dec. 11, deputies responded to a shot fired call. A person called 911 to say that four children ran to their home saying their father shot their mother, according to the sheriff’s office.

Police went to the home and Braddy came out. He was taken into custody.

The five children were between 1 and 16 years old. All were inside the home when the shooting happened, according to the sheriff’s office. Four children were both the suspect’s and the victim’s children. The fifth was just Braddy’s child.

Police have not released a motive in the case. Braddy was charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

“Our hearts hurt for these children and other family members and friends of this victim,” said Sheriff Barry Faile. “At this point in the investigation we can only guess what sparked such a horrific act of violence in the presence of these children that ended in the shooting death of their mother. We expect to know more as the investigation progresses. We will continue to follow up with the children to ensure their needs are met during these difficult times.”
