She Had Just Given Birth — Then Her Husband Walked Into the Hospital Room and Did the Unthinkable

Homewood police suspect the incident was a domestic-related murder-suicide.
A woman who had recently given birth was fatally shot by her husband in a tragic incident inside Brookwood Baptist Medical Center in Homewood, Alabama. Authorities said the suspect later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
On March 1, 2026, “our family experienced a tragedy that no family should ever have to endure,” the family of the victim, Precious Johnson, said.
The 24-year-old woman had just delivered a baby when she was fatally shot by her husband.
What Happened?
A Jefferson County coroner’s report stated that Johnson, who was a patient at the hospital, was shot multiple times. The 24-year-old had just delivered a baby with her husband, 19-year-old Kynath Terry Jr., who had recently completed his Army National Guard training.
Homewood police suspect the incident was a domestic-related murder-suicide, according to WWTM 13.
Speaking to the station, Terry’s mother said she could not understand why the shooting happened. She claimed Johnson did not want Terry’s family at the hospital during the delivery and said she never imagined her son would react with such violence.

Danne Howard, president of the Alabama Hospital Association, said this was an isolated incident. “I think it’s sad, but this was an isolated incident, and I will say in my 30 years of working at the hospital association and representing our hospitals in the state, this is the first time something has occurred like this.”
Howard said the hospitals always do an after-action report and look at what are the lessons learned, what worked well, and what might need to be refined. “And in doing that, it’s not uncommon for the hospital association to pull together all of our hospitals to share information and best practices and what worked and what didn’t work and what might need to be revisited,” she said.
Homewood Mayor, Jennifer Andress, said the investigation remains ongoing. “Last night, our department responded to a tragic shooting at Brookwood Hospital. Our officers acted quickly to secure the scene and ensure there was no ongoing threat to the public. This remains an active investigation, and we are directing all case-specific questions to the Police Department’s Public Information Officer.”
“Our thoughts are with the victim, her family, the hospital staff, and everyone impacted. We are working closely with hospital leadership and will provide updates as appropriate,” Andress said.
The newborn is reported to be healthy and receiving appropriate care from family.
Family Member Raises Money
A family member set up a GoFundMe page for Johnson’s newborn daughter, Alaia.
“Precious was a loving daughter, a caring mother, and a beautiful soul who meant everything to our family. She had dreams, a future, and most importantly, a precious baby girl named Alaia who depended on her,” organizer Rodney-Trista Roberts said.
“Now our family is facing the unimaginable reality of burying our daughter while stepping in to raise our granddaughter, who has suddenly lost both of her parents. No parent ever expects to bury their child. And no baby should have to grow up without her mother.”
