Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is already under fire for failing to find Nancy Guthrie more than six weeks after her disappearance and is now facing fresh scrutiny, with The Post reporting he is spending more time at the gym than in the office.

Nanos, who said a recall effort is “the right of the people”, was reportedly seen at his Tucson office just two times during a seven-hour shift between March 7 and March 11, per The Post.

Meanwhile, the 70-year-old sheriff and his deputies have reported no major breakthrough and have yet to identify a suspect in the high-profile missing case.

Nanos’ 90-Min Workout Sessions

The sheriff was reportedly spotted at the gym four times in five days, arriving in a Corvette Stingray for his 90-minute workout sessions.

Nanos lives on the outskirts of Tucson in a gated community, in a home valued at about $850,000.

He was once seen arriving at the office just after 9 a.m. and leaving around 4 p.m., departing in either his $70,000 convertible or his other car, a Ford Explorer, The Post reported.

“Being sheriff of Pima must pay very well! Where is Nancy?” a social media user said.

Nanos Faces Severe Criticism

MORE ON:
Unsolved cases

Nanos has been accused of sending the wrong message to the public and mishandling the case. Critics have pointed to his decision to declare Guthrie’s home a crime scene, his use of a private DNA analysis company instead of working closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and his failure to deploy cadaver dogs or a search plane in the early days of her disappearance.

He is now facing a recall effort, with the Pima County Elections Department stating the campaign was launched on March 12. Tucson Republican candidate Daniel Butierez said Nanos “has been an embarrassment to Tucson and to Pima County with this Nancy Guthrie case.”

Meanwhile, News Nation journalist Brian Entin reported on his channel, Brian Entin Investigates, that the FBI is focusing on two key dates — January 11 and 24 — reviewing neighborhood surveillance footage and speaking with families.

Nanos Sending Mixed Messages in the Media

The sheriff is also being accused of giving contradictory statements in his interviews. “The sheriff chooses to deal with the media in a bit of a haphazard way,” Pima County-based Betsy Brantner Smith of the National Police Association told The Post.

“Normally, in a case like this, you would see regular press conferences, and it would be the sheriff or his designated person, and then somebody designated from the FBI — usually a public information officer or something like that,” she added.

In an interview with NBC News, Nanos warned the abductor could “definitely strike again”, raising concerns in the desert neighborhood without offering further details.

He has also denied several requests for an interview. “The sheriff speaks to whoever he wants to speak to at that moment, which is just not the way that law enforcement should be doing things,” Smith said.

Additionally, the sheriff is being targeted for misrepresenting himself in his resume and previously lying about a suspension.

Earlier, a $1.3 million lawsuit was also filed against Nanos by a Pima County inmate citing health hazards in the lockup.
