‘Have Some Respect’: Unemployed Man Accused Of Killing His Mother’s Boyfriend After He Told Him To Get A Job

A Colorado man allegedly shot his mother’s boyfriend to death after the victim told him to get a job during an argument, authorities said.

Elijah Johnson, 26, was charged with second-degree murder and ordered held on $500,000 bond in connection with the slaying of 59-year-old David Lofley in Montrose, KKCO reported.

According to arrest documents obtained by the station, on the evening of Jan. 23, Johnson was yelling around 1:30 a.m. and woke up his mother and Lofley, who got up to let the family’s dog outside and stopped at Johnson’s bedroom door to tell him to “have some respect.”

The documents state Johnson’s mother told investigators her unemployed son “slept all day and was awake and playing games all night.”

After the incident, Lofley went back to bed, but Johnson continued to yell, keeping his mother and Lofley awake.

Lofley got back out of bed around 2 a.m. and went to the kitchen, where Johnson’s mother said her boyfriend and son got into an argument.

Johnson’s mother then also got out of bed and found Lofley and her son in the hallway arguing. The documents state Lofley repeated to Johnson that he had no respect, and he told him to get a job.

Johnson’s mother told police she momentarily turned away from the arguing men and that’s when she heard a gunshot, according to the documents.

Police said Johnson's mother turned back around and saw her boyfriend down on the ground and her son in the doorway of his bedroom armed with a gun, which he allegedly fired a second time at Lofley's head.

According to police, Johnson’s mother called police as her son smoked a cigarette in the kitchen.

Johnson was taken into custody without incident.
