South L.A. Man Sentenced to More Than 25 Years in Violent Armored Truck Robbery

Man sentenced to over 25 years in prison for armed robbery in 2022.
A South L.A. man was sentenced to over 25 years in prison for armed robbery charges. His co-defendant pleaded guilty in February 2024. He was sentenced to 166 months in federal prison.
Deneyvous Jayan Hobson, 39, was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery (Hobbs Act), one count of Hobbs Act robbery, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and one count of using a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
The Heist Resulted in Theft of More Than $166,000 in Cash and Customer Checks
Deneyvous Jayan Hobson and his co-conspirators held the truck driver at gunpoint.
United States District Judge Fernando L. Aenlle-Rocha sentenced Hobson to 308 months in federal prison. The court also ordered him to pay $166,640 in restitution. His six-day trial concluded in November 2024.
He was convicted in connection with an incident on February 14, 2022. Hobson and his co-defendant, James Russell Davis, known as a member of “Chesapeake Bandits,” robbed a Sectran Security Services armored truck on February 14, 2022. The heist resulted in more than $166,000 in cash and customer checks stolen. The truck’s driver was held at gunpoint.
Three weeks before the heist, Hobson and Davis secretly observed the Wescom Credit Union in Hawthorne and a Sectran driver serving an ATM. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California, Davis was on the lookout during the casing.
On the morning of February 14, 2022, Hobson arrived at the credit union with two other co-conspirators. At that time, the truck’s driver, identified as “J.G.,” was servicing the credit union’s ATMs.
Hobson and his accomplices got out of their white Honda Accord and approached J.G. They took his service weapon, a .40 caliber handgun, and ordered him to get on the ground at gunpoint. The group stole around $166,640 in cash and checks from the Wescom Credit Union’s ATM. One of Hobson’s co-conspirators fired a 9mm semi-automatic handgun before the group fled the scene.
Defendant Tried To Sell The Gun Fired During Robbery
Hobson's co-defendant was sentenced to nearly 14 years for the armed robbery.
According to the court documents, the next day, Hobson attempted to sell the 9mm semi-automatic handgun for $800. He said the firearm was “not all the way bad it was just shot doing a get down.”
According to court documents, Hobson was not allowed to carry the firearm because of his criminal record. He had felony convictions in 2033 in the Los Angeles Superior Court for robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, which prohibited him from carrying a firearm further.
In a sentencing memorandum for his robbery charges, prosecutors said, “The nature, circumstances, and seriousness of the offenses cannot be understated as [Hobson] violently robbed an innocent worker, forever changing that man’s life, and nearly killing him, all for money.”
