A child predator allegedly took two kids before killing himself in a crash. But was mom involved in the abduction?

A child predator is dead after crashing his car head-on into another vehicle following his abduction of two kids and now their victims’ mother faces charges, police say.

The incident also includes killing an elderly driver and one of the victims being bound with tape as he escaped to find help.

Various media outlets in Texas detailed the crazy story that continues to develop. Though, police have released few details about the mom’s arrest.

The incident started on Sept. 24 when Bosque County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a Walnut Springs, Texas, home around 10:45 p.m., according to KWTX. There, Mandi Elizabeth Russell reported her two children were missing. She said she suspected the kids were with Randall Anthony Thurman, a relative and registered sex offender.

The kids were a 7-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl.

Around 1:40 a.m. the next day, deputies in nearby Hill County found the boy at a convenience store. Deputies said the boy had packing tape wrapped around his throat and arms, according to the KWTX report.

The boy said Thurman removed him from the car and wrapped him in tape. Then, the suspect left with his sister, according to KWTX.

The boy was taken to a hospital and police issued an AMBER Alert for Russell and the 8-year-old girl.

Around 9: 15 a.m. on Sept. 25, a Hill County resident saw a vehicle matching the one from the alert between tress on his property, according to Fox 44 news. The witness reported the car to the Hill County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived on scene, the car fled and deputies gave chase.

In Johnson County, deputies saw the vehicle cross the center line and hit another vehicle head-on, according to Fox 44. Investigators believed the crash was intentional and Thurman was driving the car.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, as was 85-year-old Maureena Charles Reid, who was driving the other car, according to KWTX.

The 8-year-old girl had to be removed from the vehicle and taken by helicopter to the hospital for treatment.

On Sept. 27, police announced they charged Russell with two counts of child endangerment. But investigators have not released other details about how the mom is allegedly connected to the alleged abduction.
