A Texas man, Cedric Ricks, was executed on March 11 after being sentenced to death for the brutal 2013 killings of his girlfriend and her child. Ricks, 51, received a lethal injection at the state prison in Huntsville in the presence of the victims’ family members.

Ricks apologized to the victims’ relatives and asked for their forgiveness before the execution. The incident occurred in May 2013 when Ricks got into an argument with his girlfriend, Roxann Sanchez, 30, at their apartment in Bedford.

Cedric Ricks stabbed his girlfriend Roxann Sanchez and her 8-year-old son to death.

As the fight turned physical, Ricks allegedly stabbed Sanchez multiple times and then attacked her sons, Anthony Figueroa, 8, and Marcus Figueroa, 12. Both were Sanchez’s children from her previous marriage.

While Anthony died from multiple stab wounds, Marcus survived after pretending to be dead while Ricks repeatedly stabbed the back of his neck. Another child, 9-month-old Isaiah, whom Ricks shared with Sanchez, was left unharmed at the apartment.

Ricks fled the home but authorities later arrested him. He was sentenced to death in 2014. His attorneys filed a plea in the Supreme Court to stop his execution, but it was rejected. As he was about to be injected on March 11, the man got teary-eyed while facing Marcus, now 25.

Ricks said, “I always thought about you, and I’m sorry that I took your mom and your brother away. I hate that you had to experience that. I just can’t imagine, but I’m truly sorry for what I’ve done, and I wish y’all peace and joy as much as you can, but I’m sorry, that’s all I can say.”

Marcus showed almost no emotion to Ricks’s comments after living with the trauma of witnessing the murder of his mother and brother. Stab marks were still visible on the back of his neck as he watched Ricks die.

Ricks also apologized to other members of the Sanchez family. “I want to say that I’m sorry for taking Roxann and Anthony from y’all. I’m glad to be able to speak to tell y’all that face-to-face,” Ricks said.

Ricks was Pronounced Dead Thirty Minutes After the Lethal Injection

Cedric Ricks' attorney had filed a plea in the Supreme Court against his execution order, but was rejected.

Ricks said he hoped to see Sanchez and Anthony in heaven, so he could apologize to them. Finally, the injection was administered, and Ricks was pronounced dead about thirty minutes later at 6:55 p.m. CDT.

Ricks had a long history of violence. Before entering into a relationship with Sanchez, he was married to Teshana Singleton, who also accused him of attempting to murder her several times. The two divorced in 2004.

Sanchez had also obtained an emergency protective order against him because of his violent tendencies. However, the order expired before the murders occurred.

The man repented his action during his trial. “I wish I could bring them back. But I can't fix this ... I don't want everybody to look at me like I'm a monster. I tried to kill myself two or three times, but I can't even do that right,” Ricks said in court.
