The Garland Police Department recently confirmed that an undocumented immigrant had been shot after the suspect allegedly tried to carjack several vehicles. The fatal shot was fired by a man whose car was about to be stolen by the suspect.

Surveillance camera footage from the incident clearly shows the affected family scrambling in different directions after the intruding man tried to take their car. The family included women, children and even a baby.

Unsuccessful Carjacker Attacks Family Of 8

The Garland Police Department reported receiving a call at about 3:30 p.m. on April 3 regarding a crash involving three vehicles. When officers were dispatched to the scene near Highway 66 and Dairy Road, they discovered it was a carjacking attempt that had been prevented.

It began when the 30-year-old suspect, Jose Ramirez, allegedly rammed his green passenger car into two other vehicles parked on the roadway. He then parked his car at a nearby gas station.

He then crossed the road and entered the parking lot of a convenience store, where he allegedly tried to carjack a parked Chevrolet Impala. By that time, police had already been informed about an individual trying to take vehicles by force. Jose then got into an altercation with the family inside the car.

The car was owned by a Texas man who was traveling with his family of eight at the time. Surveillance footage shows the driver being pulled from the seat by Jose as he forcefully tried to get inside. Meanwhile, the remaining passengers in the car were seen trying to escape through the rear doors, including a small child running out.

The carjacker eventually sat in the driver’s seat and closed all the doors. However, the car owner pulled out a gun and shot the suspect at point-blank range through the passenger-side window.

When paramedics took Jose to the hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival. No other injuries were reported by the family involved in the carjacking attempt.

Suspect Believed To Be An Illegal Immigrant

Authorities described the carjacker as a Hispanic man and an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. They confirmed his identity by reviewing his identification cards. The Department of Homeland Security and ICE have been contacted to provide details about Jose’s immigration history.

The father who shot the suspect reportedly stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Although the suspect was unarmed, the man drew his firearm because the former allegedly used brute force during the attack. No charges were filed against the man, as his actions appeared to have been carried out in self-defense.

A spokesperson from the police department further stated, “As of right now we're looking at this as self-defense. We have to look at the totality of the circumstances; there are three incidents total that occurred during this shooting."

In the meantime, an eyewitness of the incident revealed that the suspect appeared not to be in the right state of mind. The woman who recorded the entire incident explained, “You could definitely tell that he was not in his right state of mind. I’m just glad that the man was able to protect himself and his family. … It’s just a blessing that the kids and the family walked away with no injuries.”
