A mom in Texas tried to give her baby away and now faces criminal charges, according to authorities.
Around 10:30 p.m. on March 20, police in Corpus Christi, Texas, responded to a home for a welfare check. Witnesses reported a woman was asking bystanders to take her infant, according to Corpus Christi police.
Officers arrived and spoke to Yessenia Cardenas, 25, who was in the area. The child was less than two weeks old, police noted.
Investigators said Cardenas was walking down the street and trying to give her infant away. A witness said she stopped to speak with Cardenas, who then offered the baby.
The witness took the child and called 911.
Police said Yessenia appeared to be under the influence of an unknown narcotic. Child Protectives Services was also called and took custody of the baby.
Cardenas was arrested and charged with abandoning or endangering a child.
