“This is evil, but you can’t look away, because the person who did this is sitting in the courtroom right before you,” Tarrant County Assistant Criminal District Attorney Marcus Hanna said. “Anybody want that man walking around you or your loved ones? Find this man guilty.”

According to WEAR-TV, Gagne was a mother of five. Holmes had previously been convicted of capital murder in connection to her death. His sentence does not include the possibility of parole.

On June 4, 2017, Gagne called police to report that Holmes was beating her, according to court records. Six days later, the two were arguing at her Fort Worth duplex with Holmes' older brother, Xondadric Antonio Holmes, was visiting, according to WFAA.

During the altercation, Holmes dragged Gagne into a spare room, holding her hostage as his brother stole TVs and other stuff from the duplex. Police were called to the residence two days later for a welfare check and found Gagne dead, WFAA reported.

Holmes fled for Florida, but police tracked him down and extradited him back to Texas.

Hanna showed the jury a picture of Gagne's body and told them that he treated her “like a piece of garbage that didn’t matter to anybody.”
