The woman said when she attempted to step up onto the side rail of their truck in order to get Gonzales’ attention, the truck began to move, and she fell, Austin’s KXAN-TV reported, citing a probable cause affidavit. The woman’s husband allegedly ran her over, leaving her with two fractured hips and a crushed pelvis.

The victim was airlifted to Lubbock’s Covenant Medical Center, where doctors performed an emergency caesarean section but it was too late to save the baby’s life.

On April 8, Gonzales allegedly told deputies in an interview that he purposely drove away when his wife stepped onto the truck’s side rail and he was aware he had run over her because he felt a bump and heard her scream.

Police took Gonzales into custody on June 13 and he faces charges of first-degree murder in connection with the death of the unborn baby and second-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for running over the victim.
