A teenage girl found a man’s body under a drainage ditch, then allegedly stole his necklace from his corpse as she filmed it and shared it on social media, Texas police said.
An arrest warrant from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office obtained by KSAT states that Bethany Martin, 17, and a female friend, 16, discovered the man’s body in Southwest Bexar County on July 26.
Investigators say the girls first called a friend, who arrived and called police, according to KSAT.
The man, 25, hanged himself and had discoloration throughout his body, KSAT reported. His death was ruled a suicide by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office, according to KSAT.
On July 29, deputies received Snapchat footage from an anonymous person.
One video allegedly shows Martin and her friend near the man’s body, and another shows Martin removing a chain and medallion from his neck, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by KSAT.
The girls in the video were recognized by an officer as being witnesses at the scene, according to KSAT.
The investigator interviewed Martin, who allegedly said her friend liked the necklace and pendant around the man’s neck, KSAT reported.
She allegedly said she removed the jewelry from his body and then removed the medallion from the chain, according to the affidavit.
She then allegedly gave the medallion to her friend and tossed the chain into the grass, according to KSAT.
The friend told deputies she recorded the incident on Snapchat, and she allegedly told officers she put the medallion on her own gold necklace because it “matched her fashion style,” KSAT reported.
The girl gave the medallion to authorities, who returned it to the man’s next of kin.
Booking records show Martin was arrested on July 27 and charged with theft to a human corpse or grave. Her bond was set at $2,000 and she has since been released from jail, records obtained by KSAT show.
The 16-year-old was also charged with theft to a human corpse, KSAT reported.
