The Sherri Papini Disappearance Case: California Woman Staged Her Own Kidnapping Hoax

Why did Sherri Papini stage her own kidnapping hoax? Decoding California’s most puzzled cases
California woman Sherri Papini’s disturbing kidnapping case draws multiple parallels with the film Gone Girl. Back in 2016, the then 34-year-old seemingly disappeared after she went out for a jog. What appeared to be a case of abduction, however, changed to foul play after Sherri reappeared exactly three weeks later, still in restraints placed by her alleged abductor.
The controversial nature of Sherri’s abduction garnered significant media attention since prosecutors believed there was reason for the woman to lie. Law enforcement found significant inconsistencies between the woman's and her husband, Keith’s, statements, forcing them to conclude that it was all a hoax.
Sherri Papini’s Alibi For Her Alleged Abduction
In the early stages of the investigation, Sherri claimed that two Hispanic women abducted her. After returning home, she told investigators the women kept their faces hidden either by wearing masks or by covering her head. Authorities said Sherri was branded with the word “Exodus” on her right shoulder during her alleged captivity.
Moreover, Sherri’s husband, Keith, claimed the abductors had brutally assaulted his wife. The couple’s statements led police to launch an active search for a dark-colored SUV believed to be carrying two armed Hispanic women.
Twisted DNA Evidence That Leads To Hoax Being Discovered
The case twisted after forensic experts found both male and female DNA on Sherri, which contradicted her claims of being kidnapped by two women. The FBI ran the samples, and the DNA evidence on the woman’s clothes matched that of her ex-boyfriend, James Reyes.
When questioned by the authorities, Reyes admitted that Sherri stayed with him in his Southern California residence during the time she claimed to be abducted. With the entire hoax being discovered, Sherri was arrested by the FBI.
She was accused of lying to federal agents and faking her kidnapping. Sherri was also blamed for willingly staying away from her husband and kids and spending time with her ex-boyfriend. Six weeks later, Sherri pleaded guilty to one count of making false statements and one count of mail fraud.
After her guilty plea in April 2022, Sherri’s husband, Keith, filed for their divorce. In the meantime, the woman was sentenced to 18 months in prison. The court ordered Sherri to pay $309,902 that included restitution to cover the multi-state police investigation drawn up.
Where Is Sherri Papini Now?
Sherri’s divorce from her husband, Keith, resulted in her losing custody of their kids. She was only left with visitation rights. She was released from prison in August 2023 and was transferred to a residential reentry facility in Sacramento County.
By March 2024, the U.S. Attorney’s office filed a fresh garnishment against Sherri, alleging that she still owed more than $300,000 in restitution from the case of her disappearance hoax. In response, Sherri’s lawyer confirmed that their client will comply with the legal procedure and pay up as and when she can.
In May 2025, Sherri opened up for the first time about staging her own abduction. Speaking for a docu-series made on her, she had stated that her then-boyfriend, Reyes, was indeed the one who abducted and kept her captivated.
In her words, “I said, my husband's going to find me. He's never going to stop looking for you ... You need to let me go. He was like, ‘Well, there's too much has happened.’ So it all came down to me. It all came down to my coverup, and that's [when] I agreed to ... make up that someone else did it.”
