A quiet block in Queens, NewYork, turned violent on the morning of April 23 when a dispute over a dog urinating on a lawn led to a stabbing that left three people injured, according to police.
Officers from the New York Police Department responded to the scene on 229th Street near 139th Avenue in Laurelton, Queens, at about 10:55 a.m. They found a 39-year-old man with stab wounds and a 39-year-old woman with a wound to her arm. Both were taken to Jamaica University Hospital Medical Center and were later listed in stable condition.

Police said the incident began when the couple’s dog relieved itself on a patch of grass outside a neighbor’s home. The suspect was identified as Hakeem Alexander, 34, who allegedly rushed out and confronted the pair. Surveillance video showed the argument quickly turning physical.
Authorities said the woman struck Alexander first, hitting him in the back. He then allegedly began throwing punches before producing a knife. The man sustained stab wounds, and the woman was cut on her left arm during the struggle.
The suspect’s 62-year-old father was also hurt during the altercation. He tried to step in and stop the fight but was cut on the hand, according to officials. He was also taken to the same hospital and is expected to recover.
Dispute escalates to stabbing after a dog pees in the law of a neighbour
Neighbors expressed shock after learning about the violence. “No one should be hurt over a dog mess,” a neighborhood resident said. Another neighbor, Jimmie White, described the area, calling it “peaceful.” “It’s a very quiet neighborhood. We haven’t had anything like this over here,” he said.
Sources said video from the scene also showed the suspect behaving erratically after the altercation.
Alexander was taken into custody at the scene. He now faces three counts of assault, police said. Charges were still being processed later in the day.
The incident comes weeks after a similar dispute in Brooklyn, raising concerns about conflicts escalating into violence.
