Virginia Mom Who Fell Asleep Holding Infant Sentenced After Baby Found Dead, Abuse Findings Shock Community

Virginia Mom gets prison time after admitting to killing six-week-old son.
A Virginia mother was convicted in the death of her 6-week-old son and will serve several years in prison. The case shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about child abuse.
A Judge in Nelson County sentenced Autumn Grace Woods to 10 years in prison. However, more than six years of that term were suspended. She is now expected to serve about three and a half years.
Woods pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and felony child abuse in the death of her son, Cyrus James Garfield. The plea reduced an earlier charge of second-degree murder.
Six-Week-Old Infant Dies Because of Abuse and Suffocation, Autopsy Reveals
Autumn Grace Woods has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The infant died days after emergency crews responded to a distress call at a home on Taylors Creek Road in Afton on December 10, 2024. Deputies and medical workers arrived to find the baby unresponsive. They performed CPR for several minutes before taking him to the hospital. The baby died on December 14.
During a court hearing, prosecutors described the scene. They said the baby was “blue” and had blood coming out of his mouth when first responders arrived.
An autopsy later revealed that the child’s death was caused by suffocation. Medical experts also found multiple broken ribs he suffered before his death. They said the injuries were consistent with ongoing abuse.
Woods told investigators she had fallen asleep on a couch while holding the baby. She said the child’s father, Ethan Garfield, later came home from work and moved the baby to another couch before falling asleep. When they woke up, the baby was not breathing, and then they called 911.
Prosecutors argued that the injuries showed a pattern of abuse, not a single accident. The findings led to arrest warrants for both parents in May 2025.

Woods entered her guilty plea in February 2026 as part of a deal with prosecutors. In court, both sides said they may never know exactly what happened in the final moments before the child stopped breathing.
Ethan Garfield, the child’s father, is still facing charges of murder and child abuse. He is scheduled to appear in court for a plea hearing on a later date.
The case has drawn attention to the dangers of unsafe sleeping conditions and the signs of abuse that go unnoticed.
