Virginia man shot and killed his mom, who was found lying in a driveway, cops say

A Virignia man is accused of gunning dow his mother, and now he faces a murder charge, police said.

It was one of three shootings in the county, in a two-day span. The other shootings were not fatal.

"A violent and deadly 48hrs in Spotsylvania has kept law enforcement active," Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Maj.Troy Skebo said in a statement. "None of the three shootings are believed to be related."

Around 12: 30 a.m. On Sept. 18, Deputies responded to the 6100 block of Pondoley Drive in the Oak Grove Subdivision for a reporting shooting. There, officers found a woman lying in the driveway suffering from a gunshot wound to her upper body.

Paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but the victim died from her injuries. She was later identified as Latoya Acree, 41, from Spotsylvania, according to deputies.

Police located a suspect at a nearby hotel in Four Mile Fork and took Elijah D. Smith, 21, into custody without incident. Police determined Smith is the son of Acree.

A preliminary investigation revealed there was a domestic argument occurred before the shooting, according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office.

Smith was charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. He was ordered held without bail at Rappahannock Regional Jail.
