A young Washington man was found guilty on charges of shooting and killing Kenneth Barksdale in December 2023. He was arrested on July 31, 2024, and has been in custody since.
D’Andre Montgomery, 20, was found guilty on May 26, 2026. The Superior Court of the District of Columbia found him guilty on one count of second-degree murder, one count of conspiracy, and one count of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle during a crime of violence.

The verdict was delivered by a Superior Court jury. His sentencing is now scheduled for August 21, 2026.
According to the court records, the incident occurred on December 16, 2023, at approximately 8:07 p.m. Montgomery was driving around the 1200 Block of 44th Place, Southeast. He and his accomplices, Kevin Hider, 20, and Eric Sheffiled, 21, were pulling the door handles of the parked vehicles to see if any were open to steal.
Among those cars was one that belonged to Kenneth Barksdale. After parking his car on the street, he went inside his family’s home with his one-year-old son. However, when he realized that he had forgotten his phone in his car, he went back outside. At that exact moment, Montgomery and his co-defendants were trying to break into his car.
Once the spotted Barksdale approached him, they started shooting. However, he quickly turned back and tried to run away back up the stairs to his mother’s home. That did not stop the defendants from continuing to shoot at him. Unfortunately, he died later that evening from multiple gunshot wounds to the abdomen and arms.

The prosecutor alleged that Montgomery was the first shooter when Barksdale confronted them near his parked car. “They heard him, they saw him, and decided what to do,” according to the prosecution. If you know you’re up to no good on that day, you know you need to be ready [with guns],” the prosecutor said in Judge Michael Ryan’s courtroom.
The Metropolitan Police Department was in charge of the investigation of the case. Assistant United States Attorneys Gregory Evans and Shauna Payyappilly were the prosecutors of the case.
